The story, which was already a piece of work, basically gets broken and discarded by Sunburn, which isn't concerned at all with making the flimsy thing work or subjecting you to it. It's aimless, even moreso with how open it is now. More than by its flaws, I'm bothered that it's not the completely satisfying experience I want it to be. But it's not fully-realized, and there's a lot that's probably impossible without porting the game and freeing it from the GameCube's limitations. It's easy to understate the impact making Sunshine a freer, less linear game has. I consider it the best version of the game, if not the definitive version (it feels wrong to call something that's such a mess "definitive"). The way you can just accidentally wander into some strange poorly-textured area with no music supports this further, like there are still things being worked on or test levels that haven't been removed. The general unfinished nature of Sunshine is accompanied by an entire new layer of complications created by blowing it wide open.
Sunburn is best enjoyed as if it were the unfinished beta of a weird, lost sequel to Super Mario 64. It's a completely new game in structure, if not in content, and that kind of sweeping alteration can make all the difference. Every area is accessible from the start, if not from Delfino Plaza then by traveling there directly. exiting out in the village resets Bianco Hills, exiting while in the windmill just restarts the Petey fight). Hold Z while selecting Exit Area to reset the level, allowing you to choose a different Episode when in the main section of a world (i.e. Collecting a Shine Sprite no longer boots you out of the level and collecting a Blue Coin no longer prompts a save. Red Coins now count as two regular coins as in Super Mario 64. Additional coins have been added to each episode to make 100 Coin Shines consistently possible to obtain. Wherever possible, Blue Coins and Shines have been made obtainable in all episodes. You can choose to play with the original ruleset or a new one: obtain 70 Shines to open Corona Mountain. A few small news sites picked up on it, but the most attention it's really gotten is from a handful of Sunshine speedrunners.
